Choose which skills are added from a CV

Decide whether skills found in a CV are added to the candidate, only suggested, or left out, and whether years of experience are filled in next to each skill.

Written by Jan Alexander Jedlinski

Who can do this: Owners and Admins. The setting applies to all job submission lists in your company. Anyone who can edit a candidate can change the skills on that candidate.

Decide whether skills found in a CV are added to the candidate, only suggested, or left out, and whether years of experience are filled in next to each skill.

Change the setting

  1. Click your name at the bottom left, then Settings.

  2. Click General settings and open the Job submission list tab.

  3. Under Candidate skills behavior, pick one:

    • Add main skills automatically (the default)

    • Only suggest skills to be added

    • Do not add or suggest any skills

  4. Under Skill experience information, pick one:

    • Include years of experience where available (the default)

    • Do not pre-fill years of experience

  5. A bar appears at the bottom once you change something. Click Save changes, or Cancel to drop the change.

General settings with Candidate skills behavior and Skill experience information

The Marketing lists and Candidate profiles tabs have their own copy of these two settings. Changing the Job submission list tab doesn't change the others.

What happens next

CVs you upload from now on use the new setting. Candidates already on a list keep their skills.

Suggested skills show under "Suggested skills (found on CV/resume)" when you edit a candidate who is still in Draft:

  • Add main skills automatically: the main skills are added, and extra skills are suggested.

  • Only suggest skills to be added: all skills found are suggested, none are added. You pick the ones to add.

  • Do not add or suggest any skills: skills from the CV are left out. Skills that came from Bullhorn stay.

Change skills on one candidate

  1. Open the list and click Edit on the candidate.

  2. Scroll to the skills section. Under Add skills (optional), click a suggested skill to add it, or type a skill in the field "Skill (ex: Data Analysis)".

  3. For each skill you can pick the experience under Experience (optional), drag it into another order, or remove it with the red X.

  4. Click Update candidate.

You can also add a named group of skills with Add skill section, for example "Engineering Tools".

Common questions

How do I remove the years next to skills? For new CVs, set Skill experience information to Do not pre-fill years of experience. For a candidate already on a list, edit their skills.

Skills are missing from a new candidate. Check Candidate skills behavior. If it's set to Do not add or suggest any skills, no skills are added.

Can I add a skill the CV doesn't mention? Yes. Edit the candidate and type it in the skills section.
